I have found with content / free stuff attracting natural links that there is a kind of "tipping point"... if your stuff is much like other peoples, the reaction will not be huge, whereas if you provide something "over the top" that makes people think "whoa", you will get a lot of links as people rush to share their discovery. I think it's better to build one over the top page than two average ones. I also think it best not to trip out too much over no-follow. A natural link profile will have both follow and no-follow links, and there is some evidence to suggest that Google might at least "observe" nofollow links even if they don't add to your "score".
